Pokemon caught: Aron (Cryrosant)
Currently found: in stats.
In the seas of the Hoenn region there lies a small isle, famous for two major attractions. The Gym is home to those who train Fighting-type Pokemon, and many trainers come here to challenge the leader. The second, less common attraction is a small dark cave, home to rare metals and ores. While most visitors are simple rock enthusiasts looking to complete their collection, the odd trainer or two sometimes comes here to train.
That was Akinai’s goal currently: to train.
“Bagon, strike quickly and use Dragon Claw!”
Bagon faced his opponent, his small eyes glinting in anger. Completely ignoring his trainer, he gave a furious roar and lowered his rocky head, rushing towards his opponent. His foe, who appeared to be a boulder with two arms sticking out, simply braced for the impact.
“No, not Headbutt! You’ll never hurt a Geodude that way…Bagon, pay attention!”
The tiny blue Pokemon crashed into the Geodude, who, unsurprisingly, held fast. In retaliation, the Rock Pokemon began to beat down on the cave floor hard with his fists. Over time the floor began to shake due to the tremors caused, and Bagon was toppled over, knocked off balance. Weakened already from previous battles, he did not rise.
“Return.” Akinai muttered, ruffling her black hair slightly in annoyance. Pulling off the fifth Pokeball from her belt, she called Bagon back to his Ball. As the Dragon type was returned back to his sphere in a red beam of light, Akinai gave her waiting team a scanning glance, the lamplight on the ground near her illuminating them. Kaya and Jade don’t need the training and Lunaris fought last battle. That leaves… “Zen, let’s do thi-“
“Nidorino, Double Kick!”
A new creature charged towards the Geodude. However, instead of using his head as a weapon like Bagon before, the purple Pokemon jumped forward and turned to the side, using his rear legs to attack, striking with two rapid kicks in succession. The Geodude went flying off from the sheer force of the attack into the darkness and does not return, either fainted or unwilling to continue battling.
“Damn, that was too quick…Oh well. Return, Nidorino!” The newcomer trainer, a boy in what appears to be in his early teens, called back his Pokemon and began to coolly walk away as if nothing had happened.
“What do you think you are doing, interrupting a battle like that?” Akinai grabbed up her lantern and walked quickly to catch up to the boy, reaching out and managing to lightly grab his shoulder. “Disrupting a battle that you are not involved in is against the League Rules and…it’s YOU!”
The boy, a redhead with what appeared to be a constant smirk on his face, gave Akinai a puzzling glance. “Do I know you, lady? As for your fight, you seemed to be struggling against that Geodude so I simply put it out of its misery.” As he shrugged off her hand, the boy gave Akinai a closer look and grinned.
“Oh yeah, I remember you now! You were that clueless passenger who thought she could get a Dragon type as a starter!”
“Yep, that’s me.” Akinai replied drily. Even though many weeks had passed since she had first met Roy, the way he had deceived her before still stung.
“I know, long time no see, right? So, did you ever manage to get that Trapinch?” Roy’s grin widened as he said this. “Or did you trade it for that Bagon from earlier?”
Akinai silently pointed at Jade, who had managed to catch up to her along with the rest of her teammates. As the Flygon flew forward to meet the boy, Roy whistled.
“I’ll be damned, you actually did i- I mean, I told you it would be the right choice!” As the other two members of Akinai’s team walked forward, Roy looked them down, one by one.
“A Glaceon and a Mightyena too? You’ve been busy! Why didn’t you use one of them to take down that Geodude?”
“Because I was training.” Akinai answered, trying her best not to grit her teeth. “Because that’s what you do, you know? Train to make them stronger.”
Roy shrugged. “That takes too long. I like to catch those who are strong and can strike quickly. If they’re weak, then they have no spot on my team.” Switching back to his smirk, he began to walk towards the cavern exit, giving a quick wave as he walked away. “I’m going to go look for stronger Pokemon. Try not to get in trouble, I won't be around to save you next time!”
“Of all the arrogant, rude, cocky sons of…”
Akinai ranted mostly to herself as she set up camp for the night. Most of her things were already set up, so she was rustling through one of her packs looking for food for her team as they waited patiently. As she searched the bag for the fifth time in vain, a tiny red-horned Pokemon popped up from her second pack.
<Are you talking about that human boy from earlier? Here.> The Ralts began to pull out labeled bags of food from the pack he was in, struggling from their weight. As Akinai walked over to thank and relieve him from his burden, Zen continued, <He sounded like a normal human to me. At least, what I always thought humans would be like.>
“Well there is normal human behavior, and then there is ‘I know everything, bow before my might’ behavior.” Akinai had begun to empty the food into separate bowls, slightly distracted from her task as she continued talking on. “I hate people like him the most…If I wanted to deal with that kind of attitude, I would have just stayed home…”
Zen shuddered slightly at this, and attempted to change the subject. <Is Bagon going to be okay? I noticed you kept him in the Ball.>
“He’ll be alright, but I’m not taking him out until after we get back to town… Oh, just perfect!” One of the packets Akinai had just opened had released a foul scent similar to that of old fish. A small amount had managed to leak out of the tear point and had begun to drip on her gray denim jeans. “Apparently one of Pride’s food bags was left in my pack. Where am I supposed to put this…” As she tried to offer the bag to Jade and Lunaris, the two shrunk away, the former attempting to fan away the smell with her wings and the latter covering his face with his large paws, whining from the smell.
<I miss Pride, even if he seemed to not like me.> Zen mused. Pride was Akinai’s old Empoleon, who she had recently traded away to another trainer for Bagon. It was also the reason why the small dragon didn’t have a nickname like everyone else: once a Pokemon has a name, it will refuse to be called by anything else unless the original trainer who caught it does as such.
“I miss him too, but you know he wasn’t happy with us.”
Zen nodded. Pride had often butted heads with Akinai because she had preferred to train at a leisurely pace, while the penguin Pokemon had wanted to battle more often and become powerful quickly. When a fellow trainer came forward and asked if she wanted to trade, Akinai had reluctantly agreed.
“Either way, what’s done is done. In time Bagon will listen, and he’ll fit in with us no problem.” I hope she added silently as she emptied the last food packet. “Alright, get your food everyone!”
Jade and Lunaris simply stared at her. Kaya, who was a further distance away, began to walk closer before stopping dead in her tracks, nose wrinkling.
“Damned fish food…” Picking up the old packet, she walked a fair distance away and dumped the food, covering with a fair amount of dirt to mask the smell. As she returned back to the campsite, her Pokemon had already begun to start eating. As she sat down to prepare her own food, Lunaris looked up at her and began to start whining again.
Akinai paused to look down at her jeans. She had done her best to clean up the mess, but nothing could get rid of the odor save for washing them. “I can’t do anything about the smell, Lunaris, sorry but you’re going to have to deal with it just this once.” Her mind finally distracted off of Roy, she pulled out a can of stew along with a can opener and began to make her meal.
<Akinai, wake up! I thought I heard something going though the packs.>
“Wuzzat?” Akinai shifted a little in her sleeping bag, still half asleep.
<I said, something is going through…there it is again!> There was the sound of a zipper opening, then stopping abruptly on something. Muffled cursing was overheard by the Ralts, followed by the loud ripping of cloth being torn.
Dark emerald eyes opened wide at this new sound. Akinai darted quickly up, turning towards her pack. “What in the world was that?” As she rose to her full height, two small figures began to try dragging her pack away. Relighting the lantern, Akinai witnessed an odd sight.
What greeted her eyes were an Aron and Mawile, who were apparently trying to run off with the pack she had put the food and cooking gear in. The Aron already had a half-eaten fork in its mouth for an early meal, and the Mawile had a small amount of dirt covering her paws and a bit of torn cloth from the pack on its horns.
Akinai moved the lantern slightly over and looked at the area where she had buried the old food. Sure enough, the ground in the area was disturbed. As soon as the lantern had moved away from them, the Steel duo began to start moving the bag away again.
“Oh, no you don’t…Lunaris, Kaya, stop them!” Akinai yelled. How did those two wild Pokemon make it past her team? Those guys must sleep deeper than me. The two Pokemon woke up instantly upon being called, and rushed towards the pack.
Mawile screeched as she saw the Mightyena and Glaceon run towards them. Letting go of her side of the pack, the Deceiver Pokemon ran off into the darkness. Giving Akinai a quick nod, Lunaris pursued after it in a swift run.
The Aron, unlike its companion, held fast. Dropping the fork the iron eating Pokemon had stowed in its mouth earlier, it turned to face Kaya. Large blue eyes glaring at the Glaceon, the Aron began to shimmer. Within moments its entire body was covered in a shining coat of armor, adding to the already impressive defense the creature already had.
“Still want to fight without your friend? Interesting…” Akinai gave the Aron a closer look. The Pokemon did not seem to be afraid at all to be facing the much more experienced Glaceon, and had set itself up between Kaya and the bag perfectly. “Kaya, try to deter it with Icy Wind!”
Kaya took a deep breath, concentrating as she did so, and released in a sharp blow. A frigid blast of wind was released from the Glaceon’s mouth and struck the Aron directly. Small icy patches began to appear on the Aron’s smooth white steel hide and legs, hindering its movement.
Aron shivered not once from the cold, despite being half Rock. Instead, it seemed more agitated then hurt. As Kaya began to blow another blast it put another shimmering shield up, this one a golden color that seemed to act like a wall, blocking the second attack.
“Charge up with Focus Energy while that shield is up!” If the Aron was going to fight using Protect, Akinai would be damned if she wasn’t going to take advantage of the situation.
Kaya closed her eyes and began to focus on her body and the sound of her own heartbeat. Taking a deep breath, she did her best to remember the sound and the feeling of striking an opponent hard. As she opened her eyes, the shield around the Aron had begun to dissipate.
As the shield faded, Aron began to put up another coat of shining armor. With this added to the previous coat and the creature’s already steel skin, the Pokemon seemed to be an almost complete silvery white color.
That color reminds me of a metal found back at home. Back where she had come from, there was a wondrous ore that could withstand any blow and deflect any attack. What was the name again…? Shaking her head to clear her scattered thoughts, Akinai focused back to the battle at hand.
“Kaya, if we keep letting it put up defenses this battle will take all night! See if you can stop it with Ice Fang.”
Kaya leaped forward, fangs bared. Before she struck, her teeth seemed to be covered in a thin layer of frost. Aiming for the small ridge sticking out of the Aron’s back, she bit down hard. Not even a few seconds later she released the hold, crying out while putting up a paw to her mouth.
“That must have been like biting onto hard metal…Sorry, Kaya.” Akinai winced along with her Pokemon. As she was distracted, a thick layer of ice began to grow and start covering the Aron.
<Akinai, look! Kaya was able to freeze it first.> Zen, who had been silently following the battle, sent a quick mental response to Akinai.
The frozen Aron began to shake, as if it was trying to break free. Considering the will it had already shown earlier, there was a chance the Pokemon would even be successful in doing so.
Akinai quickly ran to her first bag and began to search for one of her spare Pokeballs. Aiming, she threw the Ball at Aron as small cracks were forming in the ice block.
The Ball absorbed the Aron in a beam of light and dropped to the ground, shaking as it fell.
Which would prove stronger: Aron’s will or the Pokeball?
